Intensive leadership course with OsloMet as client

OsloMet

6 weeks

Group project

Focus on leadership, group dynamics, project management, and client relations.

Intent In this subject about dynamic project management, there were design offices with students from each of the years in the bachelor classes, where the third-year students were to enter a leadership role in the project. Our leader team consisted of four students who were in charge of all contact with the client, leadership within the design office, and passive participation in the design process. We also had a strong focus on creating unity and well-being in the group.

Our design office collaborated with OsloMet. The university wanted to automate the process around the acquisition and replacement of identification cards for students and employees at OsloMet. There had already been developed software for the service, and our task was to propose a physical design of the self-service kiosk, as well as the front-end of the software.

Process As a third-year student my focus was a leadership role and within the leader-team, my responsibility was to be the client’s and the student’s contact person.

The first two weeks were used for planning the implementation of the design office. We had five goals and strategies for the group during the four weeks: lead by example, invest in the unity in the group, ownership of the end result, carry out a complete design process and introduce the other students to methods we found useful throughout our education.

Planing the four weeks with a design office using the method Prosjektpil for time management etc.

Design The delivery to the client OsloMet consisted of a 1: 1 function model, graphic design of an alumni concept on the outside of the self-service kiosk (called Captura), suggestions for camera and screen suspension, and proposals for UI of software following OsloMet’s visual profile.

Afterthought I learned quite a lot about myself during these weeks, about my qualities and leadership. I discovered that I very much enjoy the role of being a leader, and found it exciting to experience how different tools and methods were able to influence productivity and focus within the group. Analyzing why certain assignments worked out or not, and how we as the leader-team could improve and engage our group further is something I found especially interesting.

We experienced that we managed to create a good and safe environment where the group members were not afraid to try or fail. Contact with the client was a new element for all of us, and we felt a responsibility to appear professional and concise for OsloMet. As a leader-team, we set requirements for the customer as there was little ownership of the project on the client’s side in the beginning, and we challenged their wishes in relation to delivery. In my experience, we learned a great deal by being assigned this responsibility.
