Snøfnugg

Clock inspired by the captivating snow crystals of winter

Intent The intent behind this project was to give us students first-hand experience with small-scale production by producing nine identical products. The result had to match a pre-established price and reflect this value in material cost as well as labor. The product in combination with a simple design for packaging was accordingly sold at an exhibition at OsloMet campus Kjeller.

Process This project was early during my bachelor’s degree and was the first where I delivered a functional product with a high finish. I was inspired by nature and used paper as a playful sketching tool. By folding the paper and cutting it in different ways a found interesting elements and by repeating these the final pattern revealed itself. This mock-up method also gave great insight into the product in full size.

This project was a golden opportunity to get familiar with 3D programs (I used Fushion360) and the pattern was transferred into 3D before it was milled on the CNC. This method left a lot of after-work with sawing and sanding, and the after work was one of the biggest experiences I bring with me.

Design Snøfnugg is a minimalistic wall clock inspired by snow crystals. The product’s main function is to be a decorative element in the room. The clock is made out of birch plywood, and the surface is untreated. In this way, the color of the material will change over time and the nine different clocks will be characterized differently from where the customer has placed the product, how much sun, etc. the clock is exposed to.
